Lee County accepts Saugahatchee Crossing roads into county maintenance; owners must record documents

The Lee County Commission on May 1 voted to accept five paved roads in the Saugahatchee Crossing subdivision into the county highway department’s maintenance system after property owners completed surveys, quick‑claim deeds and roadway repairs.

Justin Hawkins of the highway department and Commissioner Doug Cannon told the commission the property owners association worked with surveyors and attorneys to resolve right‑of‑way questions and to provide the documentation the county requested when it reviewed the subdivision in January 2024. The five roads total “a little more than 2½ miles” of paved roadway, the highway department told commissioners.

The county’s acceptance is conditioned on the recording of the documents; at the meeting staff said once the necessary deeds and surveys are recorded the highway department will add the roads to its maintenance list. The county also stipulated the roads should not be considered for total resurfacing for a minimum of five years after acceptance.

Commission action: Commissioner Cannon moved to accept the roads and a second was recorded. A resident from Saugahatchee Crossing who attended the meeting told the commission the staff description was accurate. The commission indicated approval by voice vote.

What’s next: Staff said the department will record the documents and then formally add the roads to the maintenance schedule. The transcript does not include detailed resurfacing plans or a cost estimate for future maintenance.
