At the April 14 meeting the Nassau Bay City Council heard an update on a benchmarking review by 65 North Group of the city's building and police departments, a recommendation of the Charter Review Committee intended to produce best-practice guidance for smaller cities.
City staff said 65 North has been working with staff since late 2024 and has sent 613 emails to local contractors to solicit input on the building department; about 21% of contractors had responded at the time of the report. The police-department survey had fewer responses so far (about 10 responses reported), most from residents, and staff also distributed 200 flyers across nine apartment complexes.
Councilmembers described the work as a constructive, non-punitive benchmarking exercise to help department heads compare operations against similar jurisdictions. The consultant's output will include citizen feedback (a survey inserted into the April and May water bills was announced) along with operational benchmarking and recommendations for continuous improvement.
Councilmembers emphasized the project's intent: use outside expertise to identify achievable improvements for departments that together represent significant portions of the city budget. No policy changes or budget decisions were made at the meeting.
