Police and fire chiefs report staffing, training and call volumes; Citizens Police Academy set for May

Police and fire officials briefed the Town Council on staffing and operational activity for February during the April 1 meeting.
Police: Police Chief (referred to in the meeting as Chief Bell) said the department currently has four officers in the police academy and one in field training; the department reported being fully staffed at that time and said it is not actively hiring. The department set a Citizens Police Academy to begin May 8, a seven-week program led by Officer Kaylee Herrera; the chief encouraged citizen sign-ups via a QR code and email provided in the packet. The police call report for February included 326 traffic stops, 261 “other calls,” eight arrests, 102 citations and 31 warnings; part 1 crimes reported were one assault, seven thefts and one motor vehicle theft. Mutual aid given totaled 18 instances (to Collin County Sheriff's Office, the City of Allen and City of Plano) and mutual aid received was five (all from Collin County Sheriff’s Office). The chief said much of the department’s risk testing and revenue confirmations (e.g., tower lease fees or cell-tower fees) are managed through other funds.
Fire and EMS: Fire Chief Jeff (identified in the department update) reported February counts of seven fires, 65 EMS calls, nine vehicle accidents and ten fire alarms. Average response time was 5 minutes 45 seconds; district call distribution and mutual-aid exchanges were provided in the packet. The department announced a spring public safety open house at Fire Station 1 on May 18 (2–4 p.m.).
Why it matters: Staffing levels, academy pipelines and mutual-aid relationships affect public-safety coverage and response times. The Citizens Police Academy is a public-engagement effort to increase transparency and civic knowledge of policing.
