The Wichita City Council on May 6 approved a reallocation of unspent District 1 Hyatt sale-proceeds funds to support youth recreation programs in District 1.
Staff reported $73,450 in unutilized District 1 Hyatt proceeds. The council approved moving $49,450 to a youth football scholarship program that will cover full registration and uniform costs for up to 430 city residents, with families required to pay a $25 participation fee. The remaining $24,000 was allocated to provide free admission for people 17 and younger at McAfee Pool on designated Saturdays across the 2025 and 2026 pool seasons; staff estimated the pool staffing and extra-hour costs at $1,500 per open day.
Council members said they supported using remaining district-directed Hyatt funds for programs that directly increase youth access to recreation and cited the neighborhood grant program and ongoing Propel microloan activity as other uses of district proceeds in the citywide portfolio. The ordinance placing the reallocation on first reading was approved by council vote.
