Isanti City Council approves permit, zoning authority resolution and police hiring bonus; defers finance staffing decision

The Isanti City Council approved a conditional use permit for automotive restyling at 22 Broadway Street Southwest, adopted a resolution opposing proposed state preemption of local zoning authority, and approved a police hiring bonus program while deferring a final decision on longer-term interim finance services.

Council members voted unanimously on each recorded motion. The council also discussed an RFP for interim or contracted finance services and decided to continue with the current interim provider for now and revisit staffing after the city’s finance-director application period closes on April 30.

The zoning authority resolution responded to multiple bills under consideration in the state legislature that council members said would significantly limit local control over land use and parking standards. The council adopted language modeled on League of Minnesota Cities (LMC) materials and removed a line in the original template that would have invited state–local partnership on zoning changes, choosing instead to express opposition to additional state control.
