The Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to vacate a former county “well lot” in the Brewers Creek subdivision to allow its use for a single-family residence.
Planner Sandy Robinson presented the staff report noting the lot (identified in staff materials by tax map and location on Deepwater Way) is zoned Suburban Residential (SR) and meets SR bulk standards. Robinson told the board the county purchased water-supply and well lots in Brewers Creek and sold the parcel to the present owners in February 2020; the owners documented a Commonwealth of Virginia well-abandonment process in February 2021.
Owners Karen and Steven House said the lot had been routinely vandalized and they purchased and maintained it to prevent recurring incidents. Karen House told the board the lot had not been used as an active well lot for years and that the owners complied with the state abandonment process.
Staff recommended approval with a condition that the owners submit a subdivision plat for review within six months. A motion to vacate the well-lot designation passed on a unanimous roll call.
Why it matters: The action converts an underused, county-designated well lot into an extra buildable parcel in an existing subdivision; board approval required assurance the well had been abandoned and that the resulting parcel would meet zoning bulk requirements.
