VDOT briefs board on six-year plan, intersection improvements and $165M US-58 design-build award

Lisa Hughes said the county’s secondary six-year plan public hearing is set for March 25 at 6 p.m.; the draft plan will be on next month’s agenda. Hughes said two projects are fully funded: Yates Road and a pedestrian accommodation project along Joseph Martin Highway that will extend roughly three-tenths of a mile near an apartment area and will not reach the city theater.
Hughes described operational intersection improvements at Dyer Street and Virginia Avenue — work to reconfigure turning movements to reduce delay — that will begin in March and should not conflict with event-related traffic at a nearby race venue. She also said construction on a new section of U.S. 58 (about 4 miles through Vesta) will proceed under a $165 million design-build contract awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board; design work is expected to occupy roughly a year with construction starting about 2026.
Hughes noted ongoing work at Lovers Leap remains on schedule. Board members asked about specific local items including pedestrian-signal foundations in Collinsville and surface/pothole work on Spencer Pen Road; Hughes said signal foundations are underway and paving/line-painting will proceed as weather allows.
