The Henry County Board of Supervisors approved a $100,000 appropriation to support construction of a new recreational court in the town of Ridgeway that will serve basketball, three configurable pickleball courts and small-sided futsal.
County staff reported the town already purchased the land and committed $110,000 to the project; the town has also applied for a $25,000 Harvest Foundation grant and expected to use $49,519 identified by the Commissioner of Revenue from a forest sustainability fund to offset costs. Ridgeway Mayor Nevis McCulloch told the board the town hopes to begin work as soon as funding is available and aim for mid-summer completion because some COVID-relief funds must be spent this fiscal year.
"It'll be able to use in the evenings as well," Mayor Nevis McCulloch said, referring to LED lighting on the court. Town representatives described the court as ADA-accessible and said they hope to host regional wheelchair pickleball events.
Supervisors questioned timeline and access; Ridgeway leaders said the facility would be open to the public and intended to serve both local residents and regional players where there are limited nearby courts. The board voted unanimously to approve the appropriation.
