The Henry County Board of Supervisors approved a supplemental appropriation of $241,648 from the general fund and awarded a $755,118 contract to Elliott Electric Inc. of Danville to replace the main switchgear and other electrical components at the Henry County Administration Building.
Staff said the administration building's primary switchgear and many panels date to the building's construction in 1974 and that contractors warned a failure could leave the building without power for months. "If that primary switch gear was to fail, this building would be without power for probably 3 to 5 months before they could be putting it here to replace it," a county staff member said during the discussion. Project managers told the board awarding the contract for both phases at once produced substantial cost savings estimated at more than $258,000.
The board also discussed timeline and construction impacts. Staff said specialized equipment must be ordered, and estimated a six-to-nine month turnaround for delivery of major components; contractors understand the building must maintain power during work.
The motion approved both the additional appropriation to the capital improvements budget and the contract award to Elliott Electric. Supervisors voted unanimously in favor.
