Climate Smart Kingston reviewed outreach and community events at its Feb. 26 meeting, confirming an Earth Fair publicity push, a city-supported paper-cycling event on May 31 and an April Repair Cafe.
Julie Noble reported Earth Fair promotional materials were at the printer and expected in early April; the group’s fundraising goal was stated as $20,000 and staff said they had nearly reached the target. Noble asked commissioners to volunteer for poster and rack-card distribution; volunteers in the room agreed to help circulate materials.
Paper-cycling collection: The commission moved the paper-cycling event to earlier on the agenda and confirmed that Green Sheen is organizing a May 31 collection at the plaza (registration live via a QR code Green Sheen provided). Noble asked the commission to help distribute flyers to hardware stores, Goodwill/restore outlets and transfer stations as available. The city will require pre-registration for the event; organizers need 10–15 volunteers to work 8 a.m.–1 p.m. on the event day; the contractor indicated volunteers would receive $20/hour (cash) through the contractor; the commission agreed to circulate first-refusal offers to members.
Repair Cafe and staffing: Commissioners reported the Repair Cafe is scheduled for April and organizers will circulate a flyer. Parks and environment staff announced seasonal educator and junior naturalist summer positions; application links are on the city’s Parks & Recreation jobs page and staff asked for social-media help to publicize them.
Why it matters These outreach events provide direct community engagement for the city’s sustainability programs and are a primary vehicle for resident education and volunteer recruitment. Volunteers, printed flyers and social-media amplification were identified as immediate needs.
