Georgetown council certifies two candidates for 2025 election

The Georgetown Town Council on April 17 certified Councilwoman Christine Diaz Malone as the Ward 1 candidate and Councilman Anthony Neal as the Ward 2 candidate for the 2025 election during a brief special meeting at Georgetown Town Hall.

Council members convened the special session to verify that the nominees meet the qualifications spelled out in the town charter. Town staff read language from the charter before each vote, citing section 3.2, which sets age, citizenship and residency requirements for council members and the mayor.

Under the charter reading presented at the meeting, candidates must be at least 21 years old, citizens of the United States and of the state of Delaware, and bona fide residents of Georgetown and of the ward they seek to represent. After the charter language was recited, a motion was made and seconded to accept Christine Diaz Malone as the Ward 1 candidate. The motion carried with three votes in favor and one abstention. Eric moved the motion and Christine seconded, according to the meeting record.

The council followed the same procedure for Anthony Neal. Staff read the same charter language for Ward 2, a motion to accept Neal as the Ward 2 candidate was made and seconded, and the council approved the certification with three yes votes and one member not voting. The record shows the same members moved and seconded the Ward 2 certification.

After completing the candidate certifications, the council moved to adjourn. The meeting record notes the swearing-in will take place on Tuesday.

The special meeting was limited to certification of candidates under the town charter; no additional policy items or substantive debate were recorded.
