Jen Chong Jewell was sworn in as a member of the Washington State Board of Education during Wednesday's meeting in Olympia.
Following roll call, Chair Bill (name not provided in transcript) administered the oath. Jewell repeated the pledge, saying, “I will perform the duties of my office as a member of the Washington State Board of Education to the best of my” — words she spoke as part of the formal swearing in recorded in the meeting.
Jewell then delivered remarks reflecting on family, ancestry and public service. She said she felt gratitude for her ancestors and for community leaders who supported her path to the board. "I have such gratitude for my ancestors, for each and every 1 of them whose dreams and visions of liberation propelled them to find all the ways to survive and thrive so that their future generations could have a better life," Jewell said.
Board members welcomed Jewell. The chair congratulated her and invited her to share brief comments after the oath. A member thanked Senator John McCoy for his longstanding work in public education; Jewell invoked his example in her remarks.
Public comment preceding the oath included Samantha Fogg, who identified herself as co‑president of Seattle Council PTSA and offered brief public thanks to the board: "the work of the State Board of Ed is greatly appreciated and the focus that you have held, needs to continue," she said.
Ending
The board welcomed Jewell and continued with its agenda, including the Future Ready update and later DEI training.
