The ALC executive subcommittee granted a waiver to Waldron Schools enabling the district to use a cooperative purchasing process to expedite roof repairs on multiple buildings damaged in two hailstorms.
Daniel Fielding, superintendent of Waldron Schools, said he previously received a waiver to replace the elementary school roof after an earlier hailstorm. Two weeks after that approval, a severe hailstorm caused extensive new damage to the middle school, two storm shelters and the alternative learning center, leaving roofs with widespread penetrations. Fielding told members he needs to put five roofs on a fast timeline over one summer and that vendor lead times mean work might not start until June without expedited procurement.
Senator Rice and other members expressed support for moving quickly. Senator Gilmore said the community had helped salvage items before professionals arrived. Fielding said insurance claims are in process for the more recent event and that earlier damage had been handled with evidence used for the prior claim. The subcommittee approved the waiver by voice vote; members requested an update after the district receives bids and selects contractors.
