Jeff Cien, superintendent of Lone Oak School District, told the subcommittee the district is finishing a football renovation using a turf product from GeoSurfaces and that the vendor “provides a specific turf that only their company makes.” Cien said GeoSurfaces won the prior bid for the football project because it is the only company that makes that particular turf. He said the new turf “sits on a grid… it doesn't have the rubber fill ins” and “allows the turf to be 20 to 30 degrees cooler in the summer.”
Cien said the baseball/softball project is not due to start until September and that the waiver was requested now to allow time to rebid if the waiver were denied. The superintendent said the district expects GeoSurfaces would likely win a competitive bid again but sought an approval timeline to prepare for construction. Senator Rice moved to approve the waiver; the motion passed on a voice vote.
