Supervisors approve $3,900 repair for Rescue Station 3 generator

The Floyd County Board of Supervisors authorized county staff to spend up to $3,900 to repair a leaking generator at Rescue Station 3 and to winterize the station’s water systems until the building is needed in an emergency.

County staff told the board the repair includes parts and labor for a rotating switch, water pump, and cover plate holes; the written estimate presented was $3,987.52 for parts and labor and about $1,800 in materials. The board amended the motion to authorize up to $3,900 with the understanding staff would notify supervisors if additional, material costs above a modest threshold were needed.

During discussion county leaders said repairing the unit now would be less costly than deferring repairs and that, once repaired, the building's heating and propane use could be minimized until staffing or renovation plans call for full operations. Staff described the generator as a three‑cylinder diesel unit capable of running the building at full capacity.

A motion to authorize staff to proceed with the repairs and to winterize the station carried unanimously on a roll call recorded as: Mister Cox — yes; Miss Cookenbook — yes; Miss Bechtel — yes; Mister Booth — yes; Mister Turman — yes.

The board also directed staff to winterize and to place the generator on a seasonal test schedule once the winter months return so the unit remains operable for emergency use.
