Fauquier County hears proposed changes to land-development and building-inspection fees; no public speakers

Fauquier County opened a public hearing on revisions to the Department of Community Development’s land-development fee schedule and building-inspection fee schedule. Ms. Mead, a department staff presenter, said a comprehensive review comparing fees with surrounding jurisdictions showed the need to update some fees to account for inflation, personnel costs, processing time and inspection requirements.
Ms. Mead summarized the principal changes: a proposed 10% technology surcharge added to each transaction to fund new technology for applicants and staff, and a new fee to recover the cost of outsourced consultant reviews in cases where the department requires outside technical expertise. She said the most recent updates to parts of the department’s fees occurred in fiscal 2018, with a minor telecommunication fee change in 2019; prior comprehensive updates to land-development fees occurred in 2012 and building-inspection fees were last comprehensively updated in the 1990s.
No members of the public were signed up to speak on the fee schedules, and the board closed the public hearing after opening it. The proposed fee changes will return to the board for further consideration in a future meeting or vote.
