Fairfax officials warn large economic hit if federal workforce shrinks; staff outline outreach and rapid-response options

Fairfax County officials and regional workforce leaders told the Economic Initiatives Committee that reductions in the federal civilian workforce and cancelled government contracts could produce large local economic losses unless state or federal mitigation arrives.

The committee heard a county-commissioned scenario analysis showing that a 20% reduction in federal civil‑service jobs and related contractor work could translate to roughly 57,000 direct job losses and, after ripple effects, more than 82,000 resident job losses in the county. "At the 20% level, you can see that figure is close to 57,000 potential job losses," said Steven Todidi, the consultant presenting the model results. Todidi’s presentation estimated more than $11 billion in lost wages and benefits and a total output loss that the consultant said would be roughly 6% of the county’s GDP under that scenario.

The study and subsequent discussion stressed that the model scenarios are simplified and lag official data.
