Pittsburg State outlines campus master plan; board approves naming of sustainability center

Pittsburg State University presented a multi‑part facilities master plan May 14 that ties campus demolition, renovations and new construction to academic, enrollment and research priorities, and the Kansas Board of Regents approved a naming request for the university’s sustainability center.

University leaders described a data‑driven planning process that created seven working groups to align the master plan with the institution’s strategic, academic and enrollment plans. Major elements described include an expansion of the downtown campus with a College of Business facility and student housing, a science lab renovation on the main campus, a new diesel/heavy‑equipment and hybrid electric vehicle lab, dining improvements and a significant demolition plan divided into three phases. The university said some buildings scheduled for demolition are already targeted for removal in the coming weeks, and larger, more complex demolitions would follow more detailed planning.

Facilities staff emphasized a strengthened preventive maintenance program and a six‑year facilities renewal plan informed by detailed building‑condition data; items cited included utility‑tunnel work, fire alarm and elevator upgrades and exterior wayfinding and sidewalk repairs.

The board also approved a naming request to designate the Center for Sustainability in the Overman Student Center as the James R. Triplett Center for Sustainability. Regents moved and seconded the naming motion and recorded an affirmative vote. University presenters described James R. Triplett’s long service to the campus and to regional conservation and recycling efforts.

Pittsburg State’s master plan presenters said planned campus projects are intended to integrate with local economic development efforts and to improve connections between the downtown campus and the main campus for pedestrians and cyclists.
