Goodhue County commissioners on May 6 approved a joint letter to local newspapers, drafted in coordination with the Association of Minnesota Counties, asking the public to note recent state policy changes that county officials say shift costs onto counties and local taxpayers.
Staff said the AMC executive director prepared an initial letter to inform the public about cost shifts from state to county responsibilities and asked county boards to submit local letters to amplify the message. County staff and commissioners drafted a respectful, explanatory letter and sought the sheriff’s and county attorney’s concurrence; both signaled agreement.
The board voted to approve sending the letter to all local newspapers. Commissioners noted the goal is to educate residents about budgetary pressures counties face when state funding streams change and to encourage attention to the state budget process.
The motion passed by voice vote after a move and second. The board requested wide distribution to county newspapers.
