Commissioners discuss regional dispatch consolidation as equipment replacement looms

Commissioners and staff discussed regional emergency communications (dispatch) consolidation and equipment replacement at the April 15 meeting.

A commissioner reported from a recent Southeast Emergency Communications Board meeting that console equipment (panels) used in dispatch centers will need replacement over the next two to three years; several counties in the region are examining whether now is the time to consider consolidation. Commissioners and attendees noted many counties have invested heavily in their own dispatch equipment and that consolidation raises complex questions about cost, governance and the distribution of 9-1-1 funds.

Speakers described current regional practices: counties are already sharing some software and services; 9-1-1 surcharge funds would continue to flow to the consolidated center if a consolidation occurred, which could shift significant revenue and require long-term commitment. County representatives also noted that while consolidation could offer efficiencies, it can be contentious among sheriff’s offices and local governments and may not be cost-effective in every configuration.

Commissioners said the county should monitor regional developments, weigh technical and financial trade-offs and seek state guidance about how equipment replacement and 9-1-1 surcharge flows might best support any consolidation planning. No formal action was taken; the discussion was informational and commissioners signaled they expect continued engagement with regional partners on the timeline and financial details.
