Carroll County EDA approves lease to host Community Connect broadband node at Laurel Fork

The Carroll County Economic Development Authority voted unanimously April 23 to permit staff to enter a lease to host a Citizens Communication broadband node at the Laurel Fork Fire Department under a Community Connect grant, and to allow the county manager to sign the lease after review by the EDA attorney.
County staff told the board the EDA owns the Laurel Fork Fire Department building while the county owns the adjacent Laurel Fork Community Center. As part of a Community Connect grant, Citizens Communication plans to collocate equipment at the fire department and to provide about 1 gig service (both upload and download) to the immediate area; staff said the provider could also reach other locations nearby from that site.
The board moved and seconded the authorization and approved it by voice vote. The motion authorized the county manager to execute a lease on the EDA's behalf after the lease is reviewed by the EDA attorney; no lease term, rent amount, or start date were provided in the meeting.
Staff said the parties will work out a formal agreement to locate the equipment and provide service; the EDA's approval was limited to authorizing the lease signature authority following attorney review.
