Belton Youth Advisory Commission reports year activity; 15 service projects and 160 volunteers cited

The Belton Youth Advisory Commission presented its end-of-year report at the council’s May 13 meeting, outlining training, civic engagement and community service activities completed during the year.
Kara Woods, the commission chair, said several members traveled to the Texas Capitol, met state lawmakers and toured the building. "It was a really great experience," Woods said of the trip and the chance to meet representatives and legislators.
The commission described leadership training that included sessions with City Manager Sam Listy, Assistant City Manager Matt Bates and Parks Board member Diane Ring. Members helped staff city events — such as holiday and dance events — and reported two signature programs: teen night and a senior programming series that included trivia and music bingo.
On community service, the commission said its "1 Community, 1 Day" initiative completed 15 projects over two weekends with more than 160 volunteers helping with yard work and other services for residents.
Council members thanked the students for their work and asked about students’ next steps; several members said they are heading to colleges including Stephen F. Austin, Norwich University, the University of Texas at Arlington and Prairie View A&M. The council and staff expressed appreciation for the commissioners’ year of service.
