The Big Spring City Council voted unanimously to enter abatement orders for two properties the city described as public nuisances: 711 Anna Street and 700 East 15th Street.
City staff said the case for 711 Anna Street was opened in October 2023 and that the structure was rendered substandard and unsafe by a prior fire, is unoccupied and unsecured and could be entered by vagrants or children. Staff recommended abatement; a council member moved and the council approved the order.
For 700 East 15th Street, staff said the code-enforcement case opened in December 2024 after a fire that staff’s report lists as occurring Dec. 11, 2024. Staff described several structural members as having insufficient strength due to fire damage and said the unoccupied, unsecured structure could harbor rats, mice or other disease-carrying animals. The council voted to abate that property as well.
Council members asked staff for a status list showing which properties have been abated but not demolished; staff said a list is being prepared. The abatements at both addresses were entered by motions and passed unanimously with no additional conditions recorded in the meeting minutes.
