Windcrest Parks Commission discusses May 17 dog-park unveiling, sets morning hours and program ideas

The Windcrest Parks and Recreation Commission on March 27 discussed plans for a dog-park event scheduled for May 17 to mark the unveiling of new dog-park signage and to attract families and park users.
City staff and commissioners agreed the event would be a morning gathering with a tentative run time of 9–11 a.m. Rachel (city staff) and commission members discussed using one permanent sign in place and one lower temporary sign for a photo opportunity so attendees could pose with their pets.
Community member Marlena Sanchez, speaking during citizens to be heard, described donating and arranging for a weather-treated wooden box to be mounted on the dog-park fence to store shared toys. "It's solid wood. It's weather treated... Public Works is going to have it hung safely on the fence," Sanchez said during public comment; commissioners thanked her for the donation.
During the program-planning discussion commissioners and staff suggested vendors and activities to make the event dog-friendly, including: a vendor or vendor outreach for dog-friendly ice cream; bandanas and Frisbees as giveaways; a staffed photo-op area; poop-bag dispensers and an inventory of existing park supplies; and possible vendor or volunteer-run activities. One local vendor name was mentioned during the meeting as a possible dog-friendly ice-cream source (as spoken during the meeting). Commissioners asked staff to contact vendors and return with cost estimates at the next meeting.
Public Works staff reported some existing park agility obstacles are weathered or damaged and that staff removed broken pieces; wooden elements remain in place. Staff also said irrigation work and minor repairs at the dog park are pending and that the dog-park faucet/irrigation has had episodic leaks that will be addressed during a scheduled closure if needed.
The commission did not take a recorded funding vote on the dog-park event at the March meeting. Commissioners asked staff to obtain vendor quotes for bandanas and Frisbees, to inventory existing giveaways and equipment, to contact a dog-friendly vendor about ice-cream options, and to return with consolidated cost estimates at the April meeting.
