The Legislative Tax Committee voted to pass House Bill 1685, the session's grocery-tax measure, after sponsor Senator Hester said the bill would eliminate the state portion of the sales tax applied to groceries. "This eliminates that $1.08 cent sales tax," Senator Hester said as she presented the bill and invited questions.
The bill was presented with an amendment that, according to members, removed any physical impact on state general revenue. "Again, no state GRN because of the amendment," the committee chair said while recognizing Senator Hester.
No members of the public spoke for or against the bill during the committee's consideration. Senator Hester moved that the bill "do pass," Senator Petty seconded the motion, and the committee approved the motion by voice vote. The committee did not record an individual roll-call tally during the voice vote.
Background: Senator Hester characterized the measure as the grocery-tax bill for the session and said it addresses the state portion of taxes levied on groceries. The committee discussion confirmed the amendment removed a state general revenue impact, and the sponsor said she supported that amendment.
The committee proceeded to other agenda items after the vote.
