Councilmember seeks to redistribute single-event support across Hilton Village festivals

Councilman Michael Coleman asked the Newport News City Council on May 13 to reallocate existing council contingency support that currently underwrites a single annual event in Hilton Village so the same funds could be distributed among four neighborhood festivals.
Coleman, a former Hilton Village resident, said the neighborhood hosts several community events — a spring festival, fall festival, Fourth of July parade and a Gingerbread Festival that currently receives city support — and that spreading the existing support would enhance quality of life and provide more opportunities for small businesses along Ward Boulevard. He thanked Councilman Ealy for his role in supporting the Gingerbread Festival last year and said the change would not necessarily increase overall spending but would redistribute existing support to multiple events.
Councilmembers discussed the proposal informally and asked staff and colleagues to follow up; Coleman requested prompt coordination because Hilton Village has an upcoming event. The council did not vote on a policy change at the May 13 session.
