Parks commission plans Aug. 2 backpack giveaway and fun run; commissioners ask members to seek sponsors

The Converse Parks and Recreation Commission confirmed its intent to hold a back‑to‑school backpack giveaway with a tentative fun run on Aug. 2 at North Park and asked commissioners to seek sponsors and donations before the June meeting.

Commissioners discussed logistics, quantities and funding: staff recommended reducing the target number of backpacks to about 150 and adding school supplies to each pack if feasible. The commission noted the city purchased backpacks in bulk from a vendor in prior years and received donated backpacks from a local church and council members. Pastor George (Fountain of Praise) and other community groups were identified as likely partners; commissioners asked staff and volunteers to reach out to potential sponsors including churches, precinct offices, big‑box retailers and local businesses.

A motion to table final action on item 11 (backpack event details and fun run) until the June 9 meeting passed; commissioners said they will use the interim month to secure sponsors, confirm the church’s participation and firm up supply and security planning. The Aug. 2 event as discussed would include a free community fun run (family participation), a backpack distribution, snacks and volunteer‑run children’s activities; staff noted security and crowd‑management planning will be required if donations produce a large turnout.

Why it matters: with school supply responsibilities shifting in some districts, the commission said the event helps families in need and provides a city‑run distribution point. Commissioners emphasized outreach to donation partners and community groups to cover backpacks and supplies. No final budget appropriation was made at the May 12 meeting; final itemization and procurement were deferred to the June meeting.
