Commission hears parks infrastructure priorities; staff reports $500,000 pre-application for North Park paving

CONVERSE, Texas — The Converse Parks and Recreation Commission on April 14 reviewed results of a March 29 workshop that prioritized park infrastructure needs and heard that staff has submitted a pre-application for federal recreation-infrastructure funding that could support paving projects in North Park.
At the March 29 workshop, commission members used a dot-priority exercise to rank needs across the city’s three parks. Chairwoman Susan Bayona said the highest-priority item for near-term work — though costly — is parking-lot and road repairs at City Park and North Park. Other priorities included emergency call boxes, pavilion painting and cosmetic repairs, picnic shade structures, new benches and picnic tables, extending trails at Anton Schumann Park and improving signage to direct visitors to Schumann Park.
Assistant City Manager Naina Nixon Mendez reported that City staff, authorized by City Council, worked with the Alamo Area Council of Governments to submit a pre-application to the Southwest Border Commission’s federal funding program. The pre-application requests roughly $500,000 for paving parking areas and roads in North Park; staff said the grant has a matching-funds component and that the pre-application is the first step in a competitive process. If the pre-application is successful, staff will be invited to submit a formal application.
Parks and grounds updates provided in the meeting reported that renovation materials had arrived for the swimming pool and parts for zip-line repairs had been ordered; the pool project update was tabled until the May meeting because the presenter was not present.
Commissioners directed staff to include the workshop priorities in the city’s strategic-plan update and to present an inventory of park features and related green features at the May meeting, which will include a public input session.
Ending: Staff will continue work on the grant pre-application and will return with additional details, cost estimates and a formal pool-project presentation at the May meeting.
