Commission reviews egg hunt, movie licensing issue and approves craft day details

CONVERSE, Texas — The Converse Parks and Recreation Commission on April 14 reviewed recent spring events and approved plans for an upcoming children’s craft day while directing staff to explore options for a nonrefundable movie license.
Chairwoman Susan Bayona and staff recapped the March 28 Easter egg-stuffing effort and the subsequent egg hunt at City Park, acknowledging many volunteers helped and that seniors at the senior center assisted in stuffing eggs. Commissioners estimated the total eggs stuffed “in the thousands” and the chair said a later count from Parks staff will provide a final figure.
The commission discussed a canceled movie-in-the-park that was called off because of high winds and cold temperatures. Staff said the licensor’s policy typically does not refund fees except for rain or storm conditions, and that the licensing fee for the April screening was charged to the city budget. The commission directed staff to contact the licensor to inquire about refund or credit options and to report back at the May meeting.
Commissioners also raised concerns about security officer charges for events. Vanessa, a staff member, said the city’s current practice requires two officers for events expected to draw more than 50 people and that the cost should be included in event budgets. Commissioner Rochelle South said officers who attended the egg hunt arrived at 6 p.m., stood near the parking lot and left about 6:30 p.m.; several commissioners questioned paying for two hours of security under those circumstances.
On a related note, the commission approved final details for Kids Craft Day at City Park on May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. Commissioners said art supplies have been ordered and that registration will be used to estimate attendance; staff will monitor registration to determine whether security must be scheduled under the 50-person guideline.
The commission asked staff to post the craft day flyer on the city website and social media and to place the event on the marquee. Members also discussed saving leftover snacks and supplies from the canceled movie showing for future events.
