Converse parks commission affirms April 5 Easter egg hunt and movie; schedules kids craft day and discusses security

The Converse Parks and Recreation Commission on March 10 approved the final details for the Easter egg hunt and a follow‑up movie night and set a date for a separate kids craft day, while commissioners and staff discussed security requirements and timing.

The commission voted to accept the Easter egg hunt and movie in the park at North Park on April 5 at 6 p.m., with the movie confirmed as Despicable Me 4. Commissioners also approved a kids craft day event scheduled for May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the City Park pavilion, pending verification that the pavilion is available.

The meeting included a detailed discussion about security for large events. A staff member advising the commission said that events expecting more than 50 attendees require security and provided typical cost figures: “It’s $40 per hour per officer, and two officers would be required,” resulting in $80 per hour before any overtime or minimum shift requirements. Commissioners noted prior years when officers were present at events and raised the possibility of coordinating with county constables or the sheriff’s office to reduce city charges or secure sponsorship.

Commissioners also discussed how event timing affects attendance. Several members said an early evening start for the Easter egg hunt means families may arrive well before the movie’s showing, creating a multi‑hour window to supervise children; the commission agreed to coordinate closely with police and county partners. Staff said the police department had been notified about the April 5 event and that officers typically arrive slightly before the listed start time.

On volunteer recruitment and logistics, the commission agreed that junior volunteers helping to stuff eggs should be registered or that a short announcement be run past city administration for quick approval. For the kids craft day, organizer Rochelle Sal (commission member) offered to provide supplies and said she would prepare a flyer and a registration sheet and send it to administration for review; commissioners asked that any flyer or public statement be routed for quick administrative approval.

The commission also briefly discussed a proposed local chess gathering; commissioners agreed to table the chess item to the April meeting to allow organizers time to coordinate and notify interested players.

The motions passed at the meeting commit the commission to the two events and set staff follow‑up tasks on security coordination, pavilion availability and registration materials.
