The Converse Parks and Recreation Commission voted to recommend to city council an Eagle Scout project proposing a four‑chamber bat house at Anton Schoon Park.
Eli Colette, a Boy Scout with Troop 593, presented the project, saying it will provide shelter from predators and weather, give bats habitat lost to development, help reduce mosquito populations and reduce pesticide use. Colette described the planned structure as a four‑chamber house mounted on a 12‑ to 20‑foot pole with interior dimensions about 17 by 17.5 inches and a target completion of June 2025. He said material donations and help from the troop, family, Judson High School’s agriculture department and local businesses are planned.
After questions about placement and cost, commissioners moved to forward the project to the city council for formal approval. Chair Susan Bayona praised Colette’s presentation and the commission approved the recommendation by voice vote.
The commission noted the project will return at a future council meeting (likely the first council meeting in February) for review and any city-level approvals required for installation.
No construction funding estimate was available at the meeting; Colette said the cost estimate “we haven't gotten to that yet.”
