Orrville Council approves purchase of Chevy Tahoe for police fleet

Orrville City Council on April 21 adopted Resolution 14-25 to authorize the Board of Control to acquire a 4-wheel-drive Chevy Tahoe police vehicle, or an equivalent vehicle at a lower price, for the Police Department’s vehicle replacement program.
Safety-Service Director Mr. Wheeler said the purchase is part of the department’s annual, budgeted replacement program and explained the department has shifted from Ford Explorers to the Tahoe because of availability and mechanical issues with the Explorers. "We have about 13 or 14 [police vehicles]," Wheeler said when asked about fleet size, and he noted the Tahoe offers extra space and mechanical dependability officers appreciate.
Police Chief Siler attended to answer operational questions, and Wheeler reported that one Tahoe is already being held for the city. Council voted to suspend the three‑reading requirement and adopted the resolution in the same meeting; recorded affirmative votes included Esparis/Espiras, Lacks, Davies, Carr, Shanklin and Squirrel.
The resolution directs the Board of Control to use a state purchasing cooperative or solicit equivalent quotes and complete the purchase under the city’s budgeted vehicle-replacement program. Council did not identify a supplemental appropriation at the meeting; Wheeler said the purchase was budgeted.
The authorization allows staff to proceed with procurement under cooperative purchasing rules and to accept a lower-price dealer quote if available.
