Council approves purchase of bunker gear after debate over pricing and BuyBoard use

Fire department leadership described the gear as Aeroflex from Firedex and emphasized that the quoted specification covers roughly 61–80 line items tailored for structural firefighting protection. The Fire Chief said the selected gear is U.S.-sourced for the three protective layers and that the department values vendor service and product support. "The gear that we're buying right now is Aeroflex from Firedex," the chief said during the presentation.
Several council members pressed for price transparency and packet detail. Member Phil (surname not specified) said he found lower prices online and asked why the city was paying roughly double on the quote; staff and the chief explained that varying specifications (wildland, rescue, structural) and service/backing drive price differences. Staff said the BuyBoard cooperative satisfied state bidding laws and that the city negotiates on top of BuyBoard pricing for service and quantity discounts.
Council members asked that future procurement packets include full bid packets or vendor quotes and detailed specifications so members can compare offers; one council member said, "put the entire packet that comes in to finance" in future agendas so prices and quotes are visible.
The motion passed; recorded voting in the roll call included Member Patel voting no and the motion passing with the stated result of 4 to 2.
