Council approves victim assistance grant to fund police department staff

The Pearland City Council voted to accept a grant from the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, to continue funding victim assistance positions in the Pearland Police Department.
City staff explained the grant helps pay about "one and a half of our two full time employees" who provide services to victims of crime, and that the city has received this funding for many years. Police leadership told council the service is required by law and that the positions are professional staff who are not sworn officers.
Member Patel asked whether the packet included statistics on how many people the program assists and what would happen if the city did not receive the grant. City staff said they would provide statistics and that, because the services are required by law, the city would need to identify alternate funding if the grant were not awarded.
The resolution passed unanimously.
