The Pearland City Council on April 14 approved Resolution R2025-48 to continue an interlocal agreement with the Pearland Independent School District allowing the district to use softball fields at the Veterans Sports Complex behind the Recreation Center and Natatorium.
The agreement continues a more than 10-year relationship under which the city and district share use of those athletic fields. "We've had a long standing, 10 plus year, relationship with the school district and been in an interlocal agreement with them throughout that time," City staff said during the staff report.
Council members pressed staff for budget and usage details. Member Bell asked for the cost to maintain the fields; staff said the fields are meeting cost-recovery targets but did not provide a line-item maintenance cost during the meeting. Staff also said the district uses the fields "very, very little" under the current agreement โ "maybe used it 15, 20 times" in the history of the agreement, according to the staff response.
Member Bell said his concern was ensuring the city was not subsidizing the school district for field maintenance. There were no further changes to the interlocal; the motion passed unanimously.
The vote was recorded as 6-0 in favor. The resolution will extend the existing access arrangement for tournaments and other events under the terms described in the staff report.
