TUSD board approves dispatchers' integration with City of Tucson public safety communications

The Tucson Unified School District governing board voted to approve an intergovernmental agreement to integrate TUSD school‑safety dispatchers into the City of Tucson Public Safety Communications Department, board members confirmed during the May meeting.

District and city officials said the move is intended to shorten lines of communication with first responders and reduce the risk of misinformation during critical incidents. The board approved the item on a motion by board member Natalie Luna Rose, seconded by board member Mr. Romero; a roll call vote was taken and the motion carried.

Supporters said the consolidated dispatch arrangement will provide direct, real‑time access to fire, emergency medical services and law enforcement communications and leverage the city’s analytics and video‑fusion tools. "The worst thing that can happen is a breakdown of communication during a critical incident," said Joe Hallums, TUSD director for school safety. "This is really gonna elevate that opportunity to ensure that that kind of thing doesn't happen."
