McAllen commission certifies election results and swears in mayor, commissioners and utility board members

During the joint meeting, staff announced vote totals for contested wards and the commission moved to accept the canvass and adopt the ordinance declaring official results. City staff also reported that several races were uncontested; the ordinance included declarations that those unopposed candidates were the winners of their respective races.
The commission then conducted swearing-in ceremonies. Javier Villalobos was sworn in as mayor. Antonio (Tony) Aguirre Jr. was sworn in as City Commissioner for District 1. Joaquin “JJ” Zamora took the oath for District 2. Rolando (Rolly) Rios was sworn in as City Commissioner for District 3. Ernie Williams was sworn in to the McAllen Public Utility Board, place D. The meeting record includes vote counts for contested contests reported during the canvas: Tony Aguirre was announced with 950 votes to Tim Wilkins’ 494, and the District 3 winner was announced after the board reported a 501-to-370 result.
Mayor Javier Villalobos and multiple commissioners spoke briefly after their oaths. Rolando Rios thanked District 3 voters and said, “I’m honored to serve you,” and pledged open communication and transparency.
Actions taken at the meeting conclude the local certification steps for these races; the commission also directed the public utility board to take related actions and then recessed the joint session for separate swearing-in and utility-board business.
