District highlights: kindergarten healthy snacks, scholarships, JBS partnerships and upcoming events

District leaders told the Amherst Exempted Village Board of Education about several community partnerships and program updates affecting students this semester.
The superintendent said Rotary members will help provide a healthy snack to kindergarten students twice a month beginning Feb. 6; the first distribution will include a banana and a small novelty item, and Rotary volunteers will help pass out snacks. The program is intended to teach students about healthy choices and may expand if additional funding is raised.
The treasurer and superintendent reported a scholarship, described as the Ben’s Memorial Scholarship, will be administered through the Knox County Community Foundation and will provide $2,000 for the coming year; the fund will be placed in a segregated 029 fund. The district also reported a donation from Elyria Charities of $12,000 to support youth-veteran programs across the district, with thanks to Kelly Simonson for coordinating that gift.
Representatives also described a recent community meeting on pre-apprenticeship and industry credentials, hosted with local workforce partners and the Joint Vocational School (JBS). The meeting brought regional partners, community college and workforce agencies together to discuss credentials and apprenticeship options; district staff described interest in partnering and in recognizing industry credentials alongside diplomas. The JBS reported a large social-media increase since September and will host the regional OSBA spring conference at its facility on March 12.
