Mr. Smith, a district staff member, said the JROTC team, accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Odell Graves and led by Mr. Matthew Shepard, attended the Fort Benning competition and received "several awards." He described the competition as an obstacle-course-style event in which students pilot drones through a sequence of challenges.
Mr. Smith said the district hopes to arrange a demonstration at a future board meeting so members can see how the drones operate. No contract, procurement, or policy decisions related to drones or JROTC were discussed or decided at the meeting.
