Governing board appoints two deputy superintendents for academics and business

The Peoria Unified School District governing board approved two administrative appointments effective July 1, 2025: Dr. Teresa Hernandez was appointed deputy superintendent for educational services, and Marcy Rodriguez was appointed deputy superintendent for business support services.
District Superintendent Doctor Summers said both appointments followed a multi‑stage candidate review that included stakeholder panels and interviews. He highlighted Hernandez’s leadership of the district’s academic services reorganization, development of an implementation data dashboard and her role in the district’s recent “A” rating from the Arizona Department of Education. Hernandez holds a doctorate in educational leadership and has led textbook adoption work that the board approved earlier in the meeting.
For business services, Summers introduced Marcy Rodriguez, an experienced Arizona school finance executive who was serving as assistant superintendent of business and operations at West‑MEC. Rodriguez holds an MBA and has led multimillion‑dollar budgets and operational modernization efforts, Summers said.
Board members praised both candidates’ experience and local ties. Members noted Hernandez’s data transparency work and curriculum leadership and welcomed Rodriguez back to the region; several board members also thanked the candidates’ families for their support.
Votes and outcomes: Both appointments were approved by roll call. Dr. Hernandez’s appointment was approved by a 5‑0 vote; Rodriguez’s appointment likewise passed 5‑0.
Why it matters: The appointments formalize the district’s senior leadership structure and place experienced leaders in roles focused on instructional leadership and stewardship of district resources. The board discussed the capacity for each deputy superintendent to lead implementation of curriculum, assessment, operations and financial stewardship across the district.
What’s next: Both deputies will take up duties July 1, 2025, and will report to the superintendent; staff noted transition planning is under way.
