The City of Lynn Council on April 22 approved Mayor Jared C. Nicholson's appointment of Michelle La Poetica Richardson as the city's first poet laureate.
The mayor's written communication described Richardson as a committed community activist who has promoted literary arts in Lynn. The appointment followed the formation of a selection committee led by the city arts and cultural planner and including members of the Lynn Public Arts Commission and Lynn Cultural Council.
Councilor Nicole McLean moved the appointment and a second was recorded; a roll call followed in which councilors voiced the nominee's name when prompted, and the motion carried with no recorded opposition. After the vote Richardson was invited to the podium and delivered remarks about her life in Lynn, her long involvement in local arts events and her commitment to represent the city "with dignity and integrity." She thanked the committee and supporters and urged adults to support children's creativity.
The council did not attach a term length, stipend or duties to the appointment in the meeting record; the mayor's letter and the committee process were entered into the record as communications.
