Residents press council on downtown parking, water costs and Seventh Street striping during public comments

Edinburg — During the public-comment portion of its March 4 meeting, several residents told the City Council the city should prioritize a downtown parking garage, address water costs and stripe Seventh Street.

Renee Sanchezlial, who identified herself as a downtown business and cultural advocate, urged the council to advance a downtown parking garage to support economic growth and events. "A structured parking garage will provide the capacity needed to support our economic expansion," Sanchezlial said. She told council that an additional 200-plus spaces would improve access for festivals and events and help the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as it brings larger events to the area.

A separate public commenter raised broad concerns about taxes, the city’s debt and water rates. The speaker argued that property taxes and water costs have risen and called on council to find budget savings rather than increase taxes; the speaker characterized Hidalgo County as one of the poorest areas in the state and warned higher taxes could force families from their homes. The remarks were offered as public comment and not part of any council agenda item.

Ovid Montoya asked the council to stripe Seventh Street, near Connell Street, to improve safety for pedestrians and residents who walk dogs. "Seventh Street is not striped," Montoya said. He noted new light poles and asked councilmembers to have public-works crews add street striping.

Ending: Council acknowledged the comments; during the meeting some council members asked staff questions and requested follow-up briefings on specific concerns. No formal council action on parking, water rates or striping was recorded during the March 4 meeting.
