Councilors proposed creating a Funding Committee to identify grants, manage applications and pursue sponsorships and fundraising to increase revenue for city projects and services.
The committee’s proposed scope includes grant research and application, fundraising events, sponsorships and promoting Wheeler to attract visitors and investment. Mayor (name not specified in transcript) opened the discussion, saying the committee would be “dedicated to identifying and securing additional funding sources for the city.”
City Finance Manager Maddie said staff can draft a resolution or ordinance to formalize the committee and present it for council consideration at a future meeting. Maddie was asked to model the committee’s structure on other existing committee ordinances and return a draft.
Council members invited community volunteers to join; volunteer applications are available at City Hall. Council also announced plans to reinstate a mayoral newsletter to reduce rumor, improve transparency and distribute emergency-preparedness tips and committee outreach. Several councilors said the newsletter would be a place to publicize volunteer opportunities, committee needs and upcoming meetings.
Councilors encouraged residents with relevant skills to apply to committee seats and said the funding committee could coordinate with the budget committee to align grant-seeking with budget priorities.
