The New Kent County Board of Supervisors voted April 20 to purchase tax map parcel 24‑7‑4‑6, a tract of roughly 5.026 acres at the intersection of New Kent Highway and Cumberland Road, for a contract price of $150,000 and authorized up to $160,000 from the Colonial Downs Reserve to cover the purchase price and closing costs.
County staff said a signed purchase agreement is in place and a closing is scheduled for May 6. Staff advised that current zoning limits uses on the parcel and that there is a 100‑foot buffer on one side of the site; staff said the parcel could be used in the future for public facilities, but “there is no intended use right now.”
Supervisor Pearson moved to approve the purchase and to appropriate up to $160,000 from the Colonial Downs Reserve for future projects capital line; the motion passed unanimously with Supervisors Stiers, Stewart, Moyer, Pearson and Evelyn recorded as “aye.”
Staff said the county has identified the property as a potential future site for government offices or other public facilities and that acquiring the parcel preserves options for the county’s administrative complex. The board approved the appropriation as an ‘‘up to’’ amount; staff said the actual closing costs would be lower and the county will pay only the purchase price plus closing costs.
