Council authorizes application for regional Assistance to Firefighters grant to replace thermal imaging cameras

Astoria City Council on Jan. 21 authorized the Astoria Fire Department to participate in a regional Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) application managed by Cannon Beach Fire Department and to accept any award if granted.
City Manager Spence summarized the request: the regional application would include all Clatsop County fire departments, and Astoria’s ask is for replacement thermal imaging cameras at a total estimated cost of about $40,000. Spence said the AFG requires a 10% local match, approximately $4,000 for Astoria, if the grant is awarded. Fire Chief Dan Crutchfield added that the AFG opportunity is annual, that departments may apply regionally or individually, and that Astoria already owns several cameras but has four units that are old and need replacement.
Councilor Davis moved to authorize fire department staff to apply for the AFG regional grant to replace four thermal imaging cameras and to authorize the city manager or designee to accept the award if granted; Councilor Lum seconded. The motion carried by voice vote with ayes and no recorded opposition.
Chief Crutchfield said the city would know whether it was successful by mid to late summer and reiterated that the federal AFG is a recurring funding opportunity.
