JJ Duran, representing Scappoose Parks and the Scappoose Library, told the Scappoose Economic Development Committee on April 17 that the city’s Earth Day cleanup and festival will include a highway cleanup, native-planting projects, food donations and a community festival on April 26.
“Last week we got a call from Fox News… the numbers of people looking for food has increased dramatically,” Duran said, and added that the library’s food drive and promotion drew “over 10,000 hits” on social media. She asked residents to donate nonperishable items to collection bins staged with vendors.
Duran laid out the event schedule: volunteer cleanup and breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m.; festival activities starting at 10 a.m.; a community meal provided “through a generous gift from Scappoose Grocery Outlet” at about 11:30 a.m.; and a $1,500 electric-bike giveaway at 2:30 p.m. She said food and coffee partners include Fred Meyer and Starbucks, and that the Scappoose Police Department, “headed up by Chief Chris,” will help distribute the meal.
Jeff (Scappoose library volunteer/staff) confirmed logistics for donation collection: “So we’re gonna have the bins out at the festival for food donations, and we also are going to keep them up along at the vendors,” he said, adding that vendors will be asked to bring remaining donations in after the event.
Duran and other committee members thanked local donors and volunteers, including financial contributions from Brian and Joanne (surname not specified) and storytelling support from “NJ,” who will host the campfire tent at the event. Duran also credited Means Nursery for providing lilacs for planting along Highway 30 and the Crown Zellerbach trail area.
The organizer emphasized that the festival relies on community volunteers and donations to meet increased local need: “It is stark and and shocking just what’s going on in our community,” she said.
The committee’s calendar note at the meeting also reminded attendees about Earth Day and related community events on April 26.
