Erlanger council debates raising $100 gift-reporting threshold, clarifying "immediate family"

Erlanger City Council members spent most of a caucus meeting discussing proposed updates to the city's ethics ordinance, focusing on whether to raise the $100 annual gift-reporting threshold and how to define "immediate family." Council members conducted informal straw polls but did not formally adopt any changes.

The discussion opened when Council member Nisley said some members wanted more time and debate about the dollar threshold and family definitions. Council member Jasper Lucas presented examples and slides illustrating why she said the limit exists. "The purpose of the limit right now is for transparency, fairness," Jasper Lucas said, adding that reporting requirements are intended to make sure the city chooses vendors and moves forward with projects "for the right reasons." She urged disclosure rather than declining nonreportable tokens of appreciation: "If you're not comfortable doing that, then you need to decline the gift. It's really not that complicated."
