Applicant seeks backyard chicken permit; planning staff to request clearer setbacks and measurements

Rebecca Bridal, a new Hudson resident, appeared at the April 8 Planning Board meeting to seek a backyard chicken permit and to explain that the coop is a prefabricated structure that will be placed in the yard and enclosed with netting.
Bridal said the chickens have already arrived in another county and will be moved to Hudson; she said the structure is elevated, includes a ramp for the birds and is intended to be kept mostly within an enclosed run. “It’s a small house that’s elevated above the ground,” she said.
Planning staff and board members told Bridal that the application sketch lacked clear, labeled measurements showing the coop and run’s distance to property lines, the adjacent church building and the public street. The planning department asked Bridal to supply: a site plan with exact setbacks and distances from Union Street and Partition Street; the run and coop measurements; and confirmation whether any additional fencing will be installed beyond the preexisting fence.
The building inspector noted the permit review would rely on those labeled measurements so the inspector can confirm compliance and respond to any noise or nuisance complaints. Staff said the board would email specifications and standards to Bridal and that the applicant should return the clarified materials so staff can proceed with issuance or schedule a hearing if necessary.
No permit decision was made. Staff indicated the application will proceed administratively once the applicant supplies the required dimensions and the planning office will notify Bridal about next steps.
