Commission discusses historic marker program, inventory and Section House dedication

Commission members discussed requests to install historic markers and plaques across Williamsville and asked staff to prepare an inventory and design standards to streamline approvals.

Deputy Clerk Catherine and other staff told the commission several property owners have requested signage noting historic properties. The commission discussed whether owners of identified historic properties should still submit a certificate of appropriateness or whether a limited, standardized marker design could be pre-approved to avoid repeat approvals. Commissioners asked staff to draft guidance covering purpose, authority, approval process and design standards (including suggested dimensions and materials) and to compile an inventory of existing markers for review.

Commissioners referenced past examples where a sign or plaque was required as a condition of planning-board approval; they asked staff to confirm ownership and whether markers would be placed on private property or in the public right-of-way. The commission discussed potential funding sources such as grants and foundations mentioned in the discussion and asked staff to identify typical providers for marker fabrication.

The commission also announced a Section House dedication ceremony for July 25, 2025. The commission said Erie County approved the village’s petition to incorporate and the dedication will include a daytime historic exhibition at the Eagle House and an evening ceremony at the Section House; local volunteers will present period clothing and a young organizer named Alex is expected to make brief remarks.

Commissioners asked staff to draft a proposed marker-approval process and to return with a report and an inventory of existing village markers at a future meeting.
