January, the library director, told trustees that adult services ran 46 programs attended by 457 people and youth services ran 35 programs attended by 770 people. She said the winter reading challenge ended on Feb. 12 with 18 adults, 72 children and 40 teens participating and that the library has launched a yearlong program called "Your Next Chapter," which challenges participants to read 24 books before Dec. 31.
"The adult services department had 46 programs, and 457 people came," January said. She added the youth services numbers and recapped the winter challenge participation.
On facilities, January said she would like to reconfigure the West Wing to reflect how patrons use the building today, create quieter work areas and enlarge the historical room. She described consolidating some desks to reduce noise near the reference desk and suggested hiring an architect to develop concept plans before the board decides on a final approach. "What I've been thinking about ... is I would like to reconfigure the layout of the West Wing of this building," she said.
Trustees discussed the idea informally during the meeting. No formal vote or motion authorizing an architect or approving specific renovations was recorded in the transcript; the conversation remained at the planning and concept stage.
Board leadership opened and closed two public comment periods and recorded that no members of the public spoke. The board president stated that the meeting was held in accordance with the Open Public Meetings Act, also known as the Sunshine Law.
Trustees voted to accept the minutes of the Jan. 22 meeting; the motion carried without dissent. The meeting adjourned, and the board scheduled its next regular meeting for March 26 at 5:45 p.m. in the same meeting room.
